Palumeu tour

You will discover the pristine Amazon rain forest in the residential area of the Trio and Wajana Indians and you will stay in jungle lodges at Palumeu situated on the river Tapanahony. A brisk walk to the top of Poti Hill, a visit to the Mabuka rapids and information on flora, fauna and culture of the area are together a guarantee for an educational and leisure stay in one of the most pristine areas on earth.

DAY PROGRAM

3 nights (Friday - Monday) 

Day 1

We fly from the local airport Zorg en Hoop to the airstip at the Amerindian village of Palumeu. The flight is appr. 75 minutes. 

Upon arrival you will be welcomed by the staff. The resort has the same name as the adjacent village of the Trio and Wayana Amerindians. After checking in to your cabin, you will travel to the beautiful island of Palawa for a picnic/lunch.

Afterwards you can take a swim in the cool river water. In the afternoon your guide will take you to the village of Palumeu. There you will be introduced to the current way of life and crafts of the oldest inhabitants of the Amazone rain forest. 

In the resort you will soon recognize principles of the eco-lodge. The staff is from Trio and Wayana origin, your cabin is built in their traditional style, the cool evenings make either a ventilator or airconditioning unnecessary, you will have the comfort of musquito nets. 

Meals are prepared on a wooden fire with mostly local ingredients. After dinner the guide tells you more about the area and the oldest inhabitants of the Amazon. 

Day 2 

Maybe the call of of the Howler monkeys will be your natural alarm. Today you learn more about the Amazon. After breakfast you canoe to the starting point for the hike to Potihill. Potihill is a granite hill that you will climb. During your canoe trip over the Tapanahony river the guide  tells you more about the flora and fauna en route. You will certainly see wildlife such as different birds (Macaws & Parrots, Tucans) flying overhead, also monkeys and maybe even the giant river otters. At the top of the Potihill rock you are rewarded with a spectacular view on the jungle canopy.

Lunch will be served at Palumeu resort. In the afternoon you can have a go at shooting an arrow with a bow. An experienced bow and arrow handler will be your tutor. It seems fairly easy, but you will experience that it takes skill and talent. try to see whether you are a natural. 

Day 3:

You will visit the Mabuka waterfalls to relax, take a swim in the river or get an all natural water massage beneath the waterfall or spent some time in a hammock.The more energetic participant can hike through the jungle where the guide will provide more detailed information on plant and wildlife. The environment will contribute to an unforgettable BBQ lunch. In the evening you will take a nightly boot trip during which you can enjoy the nocturnal jungle sounds. 

Day 4 

For those who have chosen the 4 day program:

In the morning you can take an extensive village walk. In the village there will be an opportunity to see traditional handicraft. After lunch you will return to Paramaribo. 

For the tourists who have chosen the 5 day program:

You will take a jungle tour, where you learn more on the Flora and fauna of the Amazon. In the afternoon you can paddle in a canoe, take a swim or spent some time rocking in a hammock and enjoy the sounds of the jungle. 

Day 5:

In the morning you will visit the village for an extensive Village tour and see the local handicrafts. After lunch you will depart to Paramaribo.
