PROGRAM
At 14:30 we depart by bus from Paramaribo to Marienburg, where we cross over to plantation Johanna Margarita. We continue our journey in small boats through a canal that eventually ends in a Marsh. This area is very impressive and suitable for spotting many migratory birds and ducks and also the spectacled Caiman. After about an hour and a half boat trip through the lovely marsh we arrive on Matapica beach. There we will walk into the night onto the beach, where we look for the turtles which are trying to find a suitable place to lay their eggs. The turtles that come here are Aitiekantie or Leatherback (the largest with an approximate weight of 400 kg). Other turtles are: the Soup turtle or Green turtle, the Atlantic Hawksbill and the Warana. The whole egg laying process includes: digging, laying eggs , closing and walking back to the sea, which lasts approximately 2 hours. Afterwards we return to Paramaribo.
