Nature Resort Brownsberg, which is around 13.500 ha in size, is located 130 km from Paramaribo. Brownsberg was named after John Brown, who was a gold digger in this area at the end of the 19th century. In the early days you could go to Brownsberg by train. The gold diggers as well as the tourists used this train. After many years the train has come to a standstill at Onverwacht. Nowadays Brownsberg is accessible by road. Located at  the base of Brownsberg  is the transmigration village Brownsweg, the most important residence of the Maroons. The Maroons lived originally in de villages, which are now located in the Brokopondo reservoir. On the Brownsberg plateau, on approximately 500 meter level, are the headquarters and cottages. From the plateau there are several footpaths, which lead to waterfalls and creeks. Climbing to the plateau will be rewarded with a beautiful view over the impressive reservoir.
