Sugar has been very important in the history of Suriname. In the days of slavery there were hundreds of sugar plantations. During the time of the contractors the sugar refinery was very important and untill today the Surinamese rum, originally from that period of time, is being produced in Paramaribo.

DAY PROGRAM

We take you on a historical journey in  “the sugar trail”. In a relaxed way you will experience the charm of the district of Commewijne and discover  the sweet-and-sour past of this district.  We will pass by small places with names as:  Zoelen, Ellen, Voorburg, De Hulp and Alkmaar and you will enjoy the feeling of being at the country side and the nice moments we will have along the way.

Plantation Concordia
In the morning we have a boat trip across the Upper-Commewijne river to the former sugar plantation Concordia. Here we find the relics of a water mill of a sugar refinery from 1830. Nature has overgrown the past, but with stories we take you back into the time of slavery. So you can learn more about the history of Concordia and some of the surrounding plantations.

Tamanredjo
Tamanredjo is well known, when it comes to Javanese food. Here we will have a tasty lunch.

Mariënburg
In the afternoon we will “dig” into the turbulent past of the Marienburg plantation and pay a visit to the former factory site. A former employee will show us around and his fascinating stories will take us back into the time of the contractors, who worked here.

Boat trip over the river Suriname  
We return to Paramaribo by boat across the river Suriname. During this pleasant boat trip we will talk about the processsing from sugar to rum, at which you can also have a taste of it.

SUGAR
During this trip you will learn a lot about sugar. Subjects like the history of the production process through the years, but also information about the organization of the sugar plantations and the way of living of the slaves. During this trip there will be an extensive handout with extra information and visual  material. 

Departure: between 08.15 and 08.30 hrs

Return: Around 16.30 hrs at the Waterkant. The guests will leave from there to their accomodation.

Inclusive: Bus- and boat transport. Snacks, fruits, lunch, non-alcoholic consumption, such as  softdrinks, water en fresh fruit  juice.

Every Thursday and Sunday at a minimum of 6 persons
